Difference Between Hardship and Adventure, Just a Matter of Perspective

laureldavid.JPG In February, David Walters and Laurel Sprague left Georgia for New Mexico in search of better employment prospects. The young couple now lives in an RV at a KOA campground in Bernalillo, where they work two days a week for a combined income of $900 a month, plus free rent. Savings have been depleted; they're starting to rely on credit cards. Day 19: Millen, GA

Death of a Small Town

millen.jpg Millen, Georgia feels like a community on life support. Shuttered storefronts line Cotton Avenue. Signs of commerce appear elusive. Even the dust blows around in swirls as if it has nowhere to go.

"Way things are going, I believe it'll be a ghost town before long," Billie Nunnelee tells me from her perch behind the ice cream counter at K & K Antiques and Old Fashioned Soda Shop.
